Who’s Hot and Who’s Not

Posted in Player Highlights, Team Highlights on April 22nd, 2009 by admin

The Start of the 2009 baseball season has been an exiting one indeed. You have some teams who started off hot and are starting to drop like a stone in the standings.

One perfect example of this has been the Atlanta Braves. The Braves a week ago were tied for first in the the majors with a record of 5-1. From that point the braves lost 5 games in a row getting swept by the Marlins and losing 2 out of 3 at the hands of Pittsburgh.

The Braves also lost their first two games in their series against the slumping Nationals who were 1-10 before the series.

Atlanta also missed out on being able to erase 3 games in the standings by losing to the Nats because The 11-1 Marlins got swept by Pittsburgh.

Watch the Braves (and go Rays)

Ahhhhhhhh!

A new season. A new year. And here we go again!

There have been a lot of things going on over the duration of the past few months.

And out of all of the hoo-ha about all of the teams there is one franchise that I would like to shed some light on.

The Atlanta Braves (No surprise considering that I live 45 minutes from Atlanta, and just in case you were wondering if my favorite AL team was the Rays well you guessed right which gives you Red Sox and Yankees fans just one more reason to dislike the Rays and this website)

Just in case you have not been paying attention to the two-year disaster that the Braves called seasons, please let me recap for you and the displeasure of Atlanta fans.

  1. In 2006 the Braves fall below .500 for the first time since Bobby Cox has been manager (1990-present). Their Gold Glove, homerun hitting Andruw Jones starts to slip from their fingers and falls into a slump. The Braves are then finally overtaken by the New York Mets and end their reign of 14 consecutive divisional titles.
  2. 2007, from here the Braves continue to fall finishing second to last in the East.
  3. 2008, the braves see-saw in the middle of the East and the Wild Card but eventually fall to the bottom.

So there is the wonderful heart wrenching story of the Atlanta Braves.

You are probably asking yourself ” so what is so interesting about the braves now in this year of 2009?”

I say that there are many thinks to take into account with the Braves this year. Weather these reasons will be for the better of for the worst, they are surely things to take into accountability. The primary reason being that the Braves have been doing a lot of “player gambling”

For starters they practically gave away the face of the franchise with John Smoltz. Whatever the reason be, the Braves took a big risk with this, after all Smoltz had been with the Braves for like 18 years.

Two more good reasons to look at the Braves is that they are trying to sign pitching great Tom Glavine to a one  year extension and attempting to sign all-time great Ken Griffy Jr . Now, that combination would be almost unstoppable in terms of ticket sales and on the field.

So just keep an eye on Atlanta because thinks are bound to get interesting.

Smoltz not wearing Braves’ colors for the first time in 22 years

Certainly not something that you see every day. A veteran player that has been with a team for a full twenty-two years’ departure. His name is one of the first that come to mind whenever you think of the Atlanta Braves or their fourteen year run with victory. He is part of the 3,000 strikeout club.

At first thought, it seems insane for a major league team with somewhat of a shot at a pennant to even consider to do away with one of their major ticket sellers.

As this crowd favorite gets traded away to the Red Sox, it makes many peoples heart skip a beat.

The Braves’ do-away with John Smoltz, literally the face of the franchise, has disappointed many of Atlanta fans, believe me. But true Braves fans need to look past the fact that Smoltzy is gone, and look at the reason for his departure.

The reason being that because Smoltz was being injured so frequently, it was wearing down the rotation by always having to have a replacement in every few weeks or so. It just was not good for the team.

If you have not seen the Braves’ pitching numbers from last year, they don’t look so pretty.
